Why have emails at all? Why not have a more comprehensive profile page that informs you of this stuff - including friend requests, comment replies, stories made popular etc; - from within Digg itself? I hate emails, they're annoying and antiquated. On this 'social' news site I can't even communicate between friends or share stuff without using a third party site like Twitter. I love Digg, but they should really redesign some of these interactive elements and make the site more functional and useful without clogging up your inbox..
GlobalFoundries is making a plant in New York. Not sure if it's related though!

Chrysler rested on their laurels after the success of the K-car line. GM? I don't know what they're smoking. They never marketed Saturn or Geo correctly, and killing Pontiac as a brand will probably just drive Pontiac drivers to Japanese companies.(Disclaimer: I currently drive a Honda Accord. But every Pontiac I've ever driven was solid even at 100K+ miles.)
